DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still in the college. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home for a specific member of the Jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
